For Respiratory Therapists ·
What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll use ChatGPT to write or overhaul your RT resume, draft tailored cover letters for specialty roles (ICU, NICU, travel, management), prepare for common RT interview questions, and create a study plan for your next credential (NPS, ACCS, SDS, RRT). This is a 2-hour project that many RTs put off for years — ChatGPT gets it done in one sitting.
What you'll need
Start by pasting your work history, credentials, and target role. Don't worry about formatting — just give the raw information:
"I'm a respiratory therapist with [X] years of experience. My credentials: [RRT, CRT, NPS, etc.]. I've worked in: [list settings — adult ICU, NICU, home care, sleep lab, etc.]. Key skills: [ventilator management, ECMO, neonatal resuscitation, etc.]. I'm targeting [target role]. Help me write a strong professional summary for my resume."
Work through your resume section by section:
Professional summary (2–3 sentences at top): "Write a strong resume summary for an RT with [X] years ICU experience, RRT credential, and experience with HFNC, ECMO support, and neonatal care. I'm applying for a [target position] at a [hospital type]."
Work experience bullet points (for each position): "Write 5 strong resume bullet points for my role as an ICU respiratory therapist. I managed 8–12 ventilated patients per shift, trained new staff, led quality improvement on VAP bundle compliance, and served as the department ECMO RT. Use action verbs and quantify where possible."
Skills section: "List the most important clinical skills and certifications for a travel RT resume targeting adult ICU positions. Organize by: clinical skills, certifications/credentials, equipment competency, and software/EHR."
Paste the full job posting text into ChatGPT and ask:
"Write a cover letter for this respiratory therapist position. My background: [brief summary]. Match my qualifications to the specific requirements in this posting. Keep it under 400 words. Professional but not stiff."
"Give me 10 behavioral interview questions specific to respiratory therapist roles, with suggested STAR-format answers for an RT with [your experience type] experience."
